Seronegative (antibody-negative but proviral DNA-positive) human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) cases have recently been reported in volunteer blood donors. However, due to sample anonymity, follow-up on these cases was impossible; hence, the infection could not be neglected as false positives. The question remained: Can deltaretroviruses (HTLV-1 and its simian counterpart, STLV-1) cause persistent seronegative infections?
In this study, through extensive follow-up of Japanese macaque children born to infected mothers, we found that STLV-1 was able to establish persistent seronegative infection. We termed this phenomenon as ‘occult infection’— a term often used to describe seronegative hepatitis infections. Occult infections pose a risk for misdiagnosis since deltaretroviruses are clinically diagnosed primarily by antibody testing. In addition, there is a risk of unknowingly transmitting the virus to other people or developing a serious HTLV-1-associated disease such as adult T-cell leukemia.
I am greatly humbled to receive this award. I appreciate my supervisor, Prof. Akari, and all my co-authors for their continued guidance. I am also grateful to all the JMs at EHUB for allowing me to utilize them in addressing questions that would otherwise be difficult to analyze in humans.
